Scarborough Fair: Meaning
Scarborough Fair : Meaning
Simon & Garfunkel's
version of a very old
folk song.
I finally realized what this song is about... around a year ago, when I was 60 years old.
Here's the meaning:
In the 17-hundreds, a Man meets a Traveler who is on his way to the Scarborough village a few miles away, on England’s North Sea coast, where there is a fair going on.
The Man tells this Traveler that there is a Woman there, in the village, who was once his True Love.
She is no longer the Man's True Love.
The Man tells the Traveler that if he should meet this Woman, that he would like the Traveler to speak to this woman and pass along a message. The message is that this Woman will be the Man's True Love again; but only if the Woman performs certain tasks.
The Man describes these tasks to the Traveler; each task more impossible than the last.
The former True Love of The Man will never be able to satisfy the conditions, (and The Man knows this).
In short, The Man is telling the Traveler to relay this message to The Woman:
"I hate you.
I can't stand
the thought of you.
There is nothing you
can do or say to
change my mind.
You will Never
be my true love
(again)".
~~~
Now, why would any man convey such a message to a former true love?
There is only one reason.
The Woman has irreparably
hurt The Man.
She has hurt The Man in such a way that She has severed all of The Man's trust or dignity in a way that has caused his once warm heart to turn into a cold and bitter stone.
We are never told what the Woman has done to cause The Man to relay such cruel words.
We can only surmise what a "True Love" could do to a man to shatter his love and cause him to compose such a bitter message.
Parsley.
Sage.
Rosemary.
