Aloha! I’m Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and I’m running for President of the United States of America. AMA!

So happy to join you today. I’m Tulsi Gabbard and I am offering to serve you as your President and Commander-in-Chief.

Here’s a little background info about me:

I am the first female combat veteran to ever run for president of the United States. Along with Tammy Duckworth, I was one of the first two female combat veterans ever elected to Congress. I’ve served there for more than 6 years on the Homeland Security, Foreign Affairs, and Armed Services Committees.

I enlisted after 9/11 and still serve in the Army National Guard, currently a Major — serving now for more than 16 years with two deployments to the Middle East. I served in Iraq in 2005 during the height of the war, where I served in a field medical unit, every day confronted with the terribly high human cost of war.

I was Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2013 until I resigned in 2016 to endorse Bernie Sanders in his bid for President.

My campaign is powered completely by the people. I take no contributions from corporations, lobbyists, or political action committees.

I was born on April 12, 1981 in American Samoa (yes, I was born a US Citizen and am qualified to run for President). When I was two years old, our family moved to Hawaii where I grew up. As is typical of many people in Hawaii, I am of mixed ethnicity, including Asian, Caucasian, and Polynesian descent.

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS:

So important! The fact that net neutrality was repealed is a direct result of the legal corruption we have in our government through the revolving door between corporate America and our government -- FCC Chair Ajit Pai (as former legal counsel for Verizon) has a very clear conflict of interest and should never have been appointed to that position in the first place. This is happening all over our government -- on Wall Street, in the Military Industrial Complex, in healthcare, comms, and more. This must end. On this note, Members of Congress should be prohibited from ever becoming lobbyists -- for this same reason. I'm working on comprehensive legislation to accomplish this and will introduce in Congress.

to your questions -- yes, we need to reinstate net neutrality, and have a bill in Congress that would do this. This is only the first step. I think you bring up important steps we should pursue, like banning ISP datamining and banning device discrimination. As President, I would include investing in broadband as a priority in our infrastructure investment plan. I've been very outspoken about the need to break up the big-tech monopolies -- they wield way too much power. I'm suing Google because of how that power is abused. Lots more to say here -- will try to get some more questions. Thanks for raising this issue!

Protecting our environment was not something that I had to be taught as a kid. I'm grateful to have grown up in such a beautiful place, and was fiercely protective of our environment -- our water, oceans, mountains, air -- since I was young! It's why I co-founded Healthy Hawaii Coalition as a teenager, what motivated me to run for State House in Hawaii when I was 21 years old (not at all what I thought I'd be doing with my life at that point!). It's a commitment I carry forward through my work in Congress, and will do so as President. I introduced the most ambitious climate change legislation in Congress called the Off Fossil Fuels Act -- we must transition off of fossil fuels, end the subsidies that have been fueling their profits for so long, and invest in a green renewable energy economy. This includes ensuring a just transition -- making sure no one is left behind. We need to change the way our government subsidizes multi-national agribusiness corporations who are poisoning our water, depleting our soil, and damaging our environment -- and instead support small, sustainable farmers who are growing food to feed our people. There are smarter choices that we as individuals must make, for example through our diet and what kind of food we are eating -- using the power of the purse to make a positive impact. I will lead with a foreign policy based on cooperation rather than conflict, and work with other countries to address the environmental threats that we face. Thanks for standing with us all in this fight for our planet and future!

Working on improving the legislation before re-introduction in this Congress. In the meantime, through the course of my campaign, we will be rolling out a comprehensive environmental protection plan and how we will usher in a new green century!

More comprehensive -- to include more than fossil fuels transition.

No. Spending our money to invest in nuclear power is very short-sighted. It creates a great risk and threat to any community that hosts nuclear power -- the fact that nuclear power corporations cannot insure themselves, and rely on taxpayers and government guarantees for their insurance, should raise a serious red flag. Just look at Cherynobl (I've been there) and Fukushima for two examples of what can go wrong. Plus the waste that is created from nuclear power plants will stick around for the next 500,000 years. Go and talk to the people in San Onofre whose nuclear power plant shut down years ago, and who are dealing with the daily threat of nuclear waste sitting in barrels overlooking one of their famous beaches and communities. It also sits on an earthquake fault line. We should instead invest our resources in clean renewable energy that does NOT pose such a risk to our people today, and for hundreds of thousands of years to come.

Aloha! Thank you so much for your support and contributing to our campaign. It means a lot to me. Your question about American Samoa is one I'm pretty familiar with -- and that is currently an issue being addressed in the courts. Honestly, the people in American Samoa are divided on this. There are some who want to see birthright citizenship, as residents of Puerto Rico are. Others want to maintain the status quo for a variety of reasons. I don't think that Congress should externally determine what the outcome of this should be -- the people there should build a consensus toward what kind of change, if any, they'd like to see.

Well said. There are land ownership rights and other things that people are very concerned about losing.

I couldn't agree more that this war on drugs has been an abject failure and it must end. It has ruined people's lives, torn families apart, placed a tremendous burden on taxpayers, and overburdened an already broken criminal justice system. What to speak of the fact it has had a disproportionate negative impact on poor people and communities of color. I've introduced the only bipartisan bill in Congress to end the federal prohibition on marijuana and believe that all civil and criminal records related marijuana offenses should be expunged. I've been looking at the Portugal model and think we can take some important lessons learned from what they've done. We must decriminalize drug possession -- will maintaining drug trafficking and selling as illegal. We should not see drug addiction as a criminal problem -- it is one that requires treatment, and we need to provide the resources necessary to provide that treatment to all who need it. The path to recovery is tough and we as a society should support those who are walking that difficult path. I think it's important that we also need to recognize that those who are responsible for pushing highly addictive opioids on people in this country have gotten off scot-free. Whether it's big Pharma, doctors, pharmacists, hospitals or others -- they need to know that they will personally be held accountable for irresponsibly proliferating these drugs that have taken so many people's lives. There's so much more to say on this! Stay tuned - will roll out my plan on this with more details.

This is exactly the problem. You don't feel you have a say in the process. You're not alone.

There is a serious lack of transparency in the DNC's process and which polls they've chosen to select -- therefore creating mistrust in people who believe their voices are not being heard. I had qualified in more than 25 polls before the september debate deadline -- including in polls sponsored by the two largest newspapers in two early primary states. The DNC only chose to recognize two of them. And we blew way past the DNC's donor requirement weeks ago. Today’s Morning Consult poll has me at 4% in early states. Tied with Pete Buttigieg, ahead of Andrew Yang, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O'Rourke.

We need to reform the Democratic Party to end the corruption and make sure it lives up to its' values -- of truly being a party of, by, and FOR THE PEOPLE. As President, I will lead this change.

I love reading -- TV was pretty limited in our house growing up, which was good, because I ended up reading every book in our house at least twice! Time on the plane/trains is when I catch up on reading. Right now I'm reading "Team of Rivals" about Abraham Lincoln, written by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

FOOD. (My husband is looking over my shoulder and laughing as I type this). I follow a plant-based diet and am a fan of good food. I actually really like to cook -- but don't get much time anymore. Spending so much time on the road makes healthy eating a little more challenging but we are making it work!

Thanks so much for joining the conversation today, and for your service. You understand more than most, as do your fellow Marines, what the cost of war is, and why we must end wasteful counterproductive wars. I've never been to Okinawa, and would love to have the opportunity to come and visit. You are right -- I was enlisted for 4 years before I went to OCS and earned my commission -- I have been "in the shit" in more ways than one. I take the warrior ethos to heart -- as I know you do -- and I will always have your back. Thank you and be safe!!

This bill is about state's rights. The bill pointed to the fact that rather than passing legislation to legalize online gambling, the Administration at that time did so through an Administrative rule change. Gambling remains illegal in Hawaii and Utah. That's why Jason Chaffetz and I introduced this bill -- to make sure the voices of the people in our states could be heard on this issue. Congress is the body that is empowered to make laws -- we can't allow any Administration to usurp that responsibility.
